He was our trail ambassador extraordinaire and number one volunteer since the trail opening in Rockwood in 1993. He celebrated his 100th birthday on December 24, 2008 and many of you sent him a birthday card. Before volunteering for the trail, Maynard worked at the Snyder Bakery in Rockwood, then for the Pennsylvania Game Commission from where he retired in 1973.
During the summer months Maynard volunteered most of his time in his little office, known as the Sembower Visitor Center, at the Rockwood trailhead. During the winter months he was off to Florida for warmer weather and to ride his 3 wheeler along the beach. He said he rode for exercise, but being the young 100 he was he cruised the beach and put smiles on the faces of many people with his stories from up north.
Maynard was a wealth of information about the trail and the railroad that ran over it. He witnessed the last trains to pass over the now removed tracks of the trail and also was there to lend a hand when the trail was started. It was natural for him to volunteer to man the visitor center when the trail opened at Rockwood.
He talked to 1000's of trail visitors every year which included people from all parts of this country and other countries as well. People who have visited the trail over the years will have one thing in common, they will all remember that wonderful young-looking man that operated the Rockwood Trailhead Sembower Visitor Center.
